More than 600 animals are at home at the Little Rock Zoo. You’ll find mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish housed in natural-looking environments. The Kiddieland train, which travels around the duck pond, is popular with the kids, and the children’s petting zoo should not be missed.
The zoo is open daily except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Hours are 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Oct. 1-March 31 and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. April 1-Sept. 30. Admission is $4 for kids 1-12 and $6 for those 13 and older.
Old Mill

This re-creation of a water-powered gristmill is known for being in the opening shots of “Gone With the Wind” and is a scenic spot for relaxing and picture taking.
Allsopp Park

Allsopp Park features popular biking and hiking trails. Other facilities include a ballfield, playground, pavilion and tennis courts.
Burns Park

Burns Park encompasses more than 1,500 acres and is one of the largest city-owned parks in the country. While most of the area is still wooded, several
sections have been developed into
ballparks, hiking trails, a miniature golf course, an amusement park, bocce ball courts, a BMX bike track, a disc golf course, playgrounds, soccer fields and an overnight RV campground. There are also picnic areas, a tennis and racquetball complex and a golf course.
Funland

When it’s time for family fun, head to Funland at Burns Park. The park includes amusement rides and a miniature golf course. Kids will love spinning on the Tilt-a-Whirl or riding a pony on the carousel. Open Friday-Sunday from April-October. Wristbands are available for guests to enjoy unlimited rides. Private parties can be scheduled on Thursday or Friday afternoons.
Julius Breckling Riverfront Park

Beautifully landscaped Riverfront Park is the site of many festivals, the largest being Memorial Day weekend’s Riverfest. The park is downtown off LaHarpe Boulevard, along the south bank of the Arkansas River. Other features include Riverfest Amphitheatre and the nearby River Market District.

During the summer, Murray Park is full of bikers, joggers and soccer players. There are two playgrounds, including one that is handicap accessible.
North Shore Riverfront Park

On the north side of the Arkansas River, this nearly 3.5-acre park offers picturesque views, lighted walkways and a jogging trail. Families will enjoy the many picnic sites and open play areas. The park is the site of Riverfest activities each Memorial Day weekend, as well as other festivals and outdoor concerts throughout the year.
Pinnacle Mountain State Park

Rising more than 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River Valley, the cone-shaped peak of Pinnacle Mountain is a central Arkansas landmark. Two trails lead to the top of the mountain, and more than 40 miles of hiking trails and the Arkansas Arboretum are maintained by the park. Be sure to check in at the visitor’s center for more park information and to pick up trail maps.
War Memorial Park and Stadium

This is one of central Arkansas’ biggest playgrounds. The Arkansas Razorbacks play two games a season at War Memorial Stadium, and Ray Winder Field hosts the Arkansas Travelers baseball team during home games in the summer. Golfers can putt on the park’s greens, and tennis players can hit the courts while kids play. The park also offers a fitness center and the Little Rock Zoo.

The state’s minor league baseball team plays its home games at Ray Winder Field. The 2001 Texas League Champions are a Class-AA affiliate of the Anaheim Angels. Single tickets range from $6-$8.
Arkansas Twisters

Although it’s still young, the Arkansas Twisters arena football team has already gained a strong fan base. The Twisters season begins in May and lasts through July. Tickets range in price from $10-$38.

Winner of the 2004 Sun Belt Conference East Division Champion-ship, the Trojans are at home at the Alltel Arena in North Little Rock. Play begins in November. Coach Steve Shields leads the men’s basketball team.

The Razorbacks play two games per season at War Memorial Stadium. The team’s other in-state games are played at Razorback Stadium on the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville campus. The 2004 Little Rock games are against Louisiana-Monroe Sept. 18 and Louisiana State University Nov. 27. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Golden Lions play here sometimes, too.

Cool off and have a blast during steamy summers at this sprawling water park, which includes slides, a wave pool, inner tube rides, a kids’ area, a lazy river and more. The summer season lasts from May through Labor Day. Ticket prices are $25.99 for adults, $18.99 for children. After 4 p.m. tickets are $15.99 per person.

Little Rock’s oldest water park includes a water slide, kiddie pool, water basketball and volleyball and picnic tables. Hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon-8 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $12 for adults, $9 for children and $6 for senior citizens.
